What is Rescue?

HSLC rescues cats, dogs, and rabbits from partner animal rescue organizations, feral colonies, and citizens who report found and/or dumped animals. When HSLC rescues an animal, we coordinate the transfer of the animal to HSLC, find a foster home for the animal, and schedule an intake medical exam with our partner vet to check the animal’s health and start a treatment plan, if needed.

Where does HSLC rescue animals from?

Our dogs come from partner shelters in southern Virginia with severe overcrowding challenges and are chosen by our Rescue Coordinator with input by potential fosters.

Many of our cats and kittens come from our local TNR program for Community Cats. We regularly find friendly/lost/dumped cats while trapping as well as dozens of feral kittens throughout the year. We also rescue cats and kittens from overcrowded shelters in southern Virginia and West Virginia when we have the space and resources to accommodate them.

Further, we have a small number of previously adopted animals returned to us every year as well.
