What You Can Expect from HSLC

  • All vet expenses paid for foster animal
  • Publicize the foster animal on website (Petfinder), social media, flyers, and posters
  • Schedule adoption events at venues throughout Loudoun County
  • Vet all potential adopters through our adoption application process
  • Support our foster parents
    • Provide foster mentors
    • Hold foster orientations
    • Share Foster Handbook
    • Share online resources

What HSLC Expects from Fosters

  • Help prepare your foster animal for living successfully in a new furever home
    • Help your foster develop good habits & skills through positive reinforcement
    • Help with socialization
    • Reward desirable behaviors
    • Correct or redirect undesirable behaviors; Don’t punish, which is ineffective
    • Help identify and correct any behavioral issues that might impact their adoptability
  • Provide adequate food and water
  • Keep foster animal safe:
    • Cats must be indoors only
    • Dogs must be leashed at all times while outside
  • Bring your foster to at least one adoption event a month (prior to COVID)
  • Provide transportation to/from events and vet appointments
  • Help maintain and track vaccination schedules for kittens & puppies
  • Send personality updates, pictures and videos for social media and Petfinder updates
  • Have all your personal pets spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccination
