Why you should consider adopting a special needs pet
If you have been around a special needs pet, you know they can exhibit a tenacity and joy for life that makes them inspiring and loveable beyond measure. But, forever homes are often elusive for special needs animals. Many spend up to two years waiting, which is more than four times the average wait for other pets.
While a specially-abled pet may come with some challenges, adopting one can save an animal’s life and bring you companionship and happiness. You may be surprised how much you can gain from opening your heart and home a bit wider to make room for a special pet who will love you unconditionally and make you smile every day.
The concept of special needs includes a variety of conditions, including: physical impairments (e.g., blindness, missing limb); medical conditions (e.g., allergies, cancer); emotional disorders (shyness, anxiety), or even age (generally seven years or older).
When considering adopting a special needs pet remember that their animal spirit is intact even if their body is not perfect! Consider what they could accomplish when given a little extra time or training. How can a few home accommodations move them toward more independence? Of course, some special pets may need more in terms of veterinary visits, special equipment or medications, which you should consider when adopting. However, many of these wonderful pets don’t need anything extra, just love and patience.
“We could not imagine life without Charlie. He has brought so much joy and love into our lives. His personality shines so bright! He teaches us daily that our differences are what make us special and no matter what obstacles life throws at you, they can be overcome.
Do not be hesitant whatsoever to adopt a blind pet! They may need a little more time to adjust to their surroundings, but with Charlie that was only one day! It was simply amazing to watch him map out the house and get used to the layout. We honestly forget most days that he is blind! He evens takes his owns toys out of his toy bin, uses the stairs, never had any trouble finding the litter box or his food, and runs around the house like a playful boy!”
